Why is English so hard to learn?

Have you ever wondered how English can be so confusing to foreigners trying to learn how to speak and write it? Here are a few reasons I have thought of:
  • Our phonics does not make sense. Ex. we spell "was" w-a-s when it sounds like w-u-z why not change the spelling
  • We have several homonyms such as "to, too, and two"
  • There are so many rules for placing a coma. These rules can intimidate even the bravest linguist.
  • And of course the all confusing phrases "Driveway" and "Parkway". You park in a driveway and drive in a parkway

I guess I kind of understand why so many immigrants have trouble speaking English.
